Jodhpur Woman Earns Columbia Degree, Advances Global AI Research

July 3, 2026 by Business News Leave a Comment

Jodhpur (Rajasthan) [India] / New York [US], July 1: Reflecting India’s growing presence in the global artificial intelligence landscape, Iram Kamdar, daughter of renowned Jodhpur-based ophthalmologist Dr. Ghulam Ali Kamdar of Kamdar Eye Hospital, has earned a Master of Science in Data Science from Columbia University, New York, while contributing to advanced research and engineering across artificial intelligence, healthcare technology, and enterprise AI.

Raised in Jodhpur, Iram began her academic journey in engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology before moving to the United States to pursue higher education. She recently completed her master’s degree in Data Science at Columbia University, one of the world’s leading academic institutions, with a focus on advanced artificial intelligence technologies and scalable AI systems.

During her graduate studies, Iram specialised in Applied Machine Learning, Large Language Model (LLM) Engineering, and Scalable Retrieval Systems—fields that are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the next generation of AI-powered applications worldwide.

Building Expertise Across Advanced AI Technologies

Beyond academics, Iram has contributed to a range of industry and research projects spanning healthcare, enterprise AI, intelligent retrieval systems, and machine learning.

At Dolby Laboratories and WebAI, she worked on projects involving audio fingerprinting, vector database optimisation, and retrieval technologies designed to improve the performance, scalability, and efficiency of AI systems.

Her work reflects a growing industry focus on building AI infrastructure capable of processing large volumes of information while delivering faster, more accurate, and contextually relevant results.

Applying Artificial Intelligence to Healthcare

Iram’s research experience also extends into healthcare, where artificial intelligence is increasingly being explored to support clinical decision-making, medical analysis, and improved patient outcomes.

She collaborated with Columbia University’s Computational Imaging Group on AI-driven medical research involving Clinical Natural Language Processing (Clinical NLP), cancer detection using YOLOv5-based computer vision models, and machine learning approaches for medication dose optimisation.

Through this work, she explored how advanced AI techniques can be applied to complex healthcare challenges, including extracting meaningful insights from clinical information, supporting image-based disease detection, and improving data-driven approaches to treatment decisions.

Her research reflects the broader potential of artificial intelligence to strengthen healthcare systems by supporting clinicians with more efficient analytical tools and intelligent decision-making technologies.

Exploring the Future of Agentic AI

Iram’s current research interests centre on Agentic AI workflows, vector search architectures, and low-latency open-weight AI models.

Her focus is on developing reliable AI agents capable of handling and automating complex real-world workflows efficiently. As businesses and institutions increasingly explore autonomous and semi-autonomous AI systems, such technologies are expected to play a significant role in transforming how organisations manage information, execute tasks, and support decision-making.

People close to the family say Iram believes the future of artificial intelligence lies not only in developing increasingly powerful models but also in ensuring that AI systems are practical, trustworthy, reliable, and accessible for real-world applications.

An Inspiring Journey from Jodhpur to New York

Iram’s achievement has been widely appreciated in Jodhpur, where her father, Dr. Ghulam Ali Kamdar, has long been associated with eye care and medical service through Kamdar Eye Hospital.

Family members and well-wishers view her journey from Rajasthan to one of the world’s premier universities as an inspiration for students, particularly young women aspiring to build careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Her academic and professional journey also reflects the increasing contribution of Indian talent to the rapidly evolving global AI ecosystem. Indian researchers, engineers, and technology professionals are playing an expanding role in fields such as machine learning, generative AI, healthcare AI, intelligent automation, and scalable computing systems.

Indian Talent Contributing to Global AI Innovation

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries worldwide, the demand for professionals capable of combining advanced research with practical engineering expertise is growing rapidly.

Iram Kamdar’s journey from Jodhpur to New York highlights how talent nurtured in India is contributing to technologies with international relevance and potential global impact.

Through her work across machine learning, healthcare AI, retrieval systems, and emerging Agentic AI technologies, her journey represents a broader story of Indian talent participating in the development of the next generation of intelligent systems.
