Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has passed away at the age of 38 after battling a prolonged illness. The left-arm pacer, who played a key role in Afghanistan cricket’s early international journey, died while undergoing treatment in the Delhi-NCR region.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed the news and expressed deep sorrow over the death of the former national team player. The board remembered Zadran as one of the cricketers who helped lay the foundation for Afghanistan’s growth in international cricket.

Shapoor Zadran Battled Rare Immune Disorder

Zadran had been suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and serious medical condition linked to an overactive immune response. The illness had affected his health for several months, and he was receiving treatment before his condition deteriorated.

Despite his health struggles, Zadran remained a respected figure among Afghanistan cricket fans for his contribution to the sport and his role in some of the country’s historic cricket moments.

A Key Figure in Afghanistan’s Cricket Rise

Born on July 7, 1987, Shapoor Zadran became one of Afghanistan’s most recognised fast bowlers during the team’s transition from an emerging cricket nation to a competitive international side.

He made his international debut in 2009 and went on to represent Afghanistan in 80 matches across formats. His career included 44 One Day Internationals and 36 T20 Internationals, where he was known for his pace, aggression, and ability to deliver important breakthroughs.

Zadran was among the players who helped Afghanistan establish its identity on the global cricket stage during the early years of international recognition.

Remembered for World Cup Heroics

One of the biggest highlights of Shapoor Zadran’s career came during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Afghanistan registered their first-ever World Cup victory against Scotland, and Zadran played a memorable role in that historic match.

With Afghanistan needing runs under pressure, Zadran struck the winning runs to seal a famous victory. The moment became one of the most celebrated achievements in Afghanistan cricket history and remains a defining memory of his career.

Cricket World Mourns His Loss

The news of Zadran’s passing triggered tributes from across the cricket community. Former teammates, players, and fans remembered him for his dedication, fighting spirit, and contribution to Afghanistan’s cricketing journey.

His career represented the determination and passion that helped Afghanistan emerge as a recognised force in international cricket. From playing on the biggest stages to inspiring young cricketers back home, Zadran left a lasting impact on the sport.

Shapoor Zadran’s contribution will remain an important chapter in Afghanistan cricket’s history, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players.
