Stock Market Closes Lower as Sensex Breaks Four-Day Winning Run; Metal Stocks Drag Indices

July 7, 2026 by Business News Leave a Comment

Indian benchmark equity indices ended Tuesday’s trading session in negative territory, snapping a four-session winning streak as heavy selling in metal stocks and cautious investor sentiment weighed on the markets.

The BSE Sensex declined 104 points to close at 80,641, while the NSE Nifty50 slipped below the 24,400 mark to settle at 24,399. Despite witnessing a stable opening, the benchmarks struggled to maintain momentum through the day as investors booked profits in select sectors.

The broader market also witnessed mixed sentiment. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks traded within a narrow range, reflecting cautious participation from investors ahead of key domestic and global developments.

Metal Stocks Lead the Decline

The Nifty Metal index emerged as the worst-performing sector during the session, with most major steel and mining companies ending lower. Weak global commodity prices and concerns over demand outlook kept pressure on the sector, leading to broad-based selling.

Shares of several leading metal companies witnessed noticeable declines, making the sector the biggest drag on benchmark indices.

IT and Financial Stocks Offer Limited Support

Information technology stocks traded with a positive bias during parts of the session, supported by optimism surrounding global technology demand. However, gains in select IT counters were insufficient to offset weakness in metals.

Banking and financial stocks remained largely range-bound, contributing little to market direction as investors awaited fresh triggers.

Broader Market Performance

The broader market displayed resilience despite weakness in frontline indices. Several mid-cap and small-cap stocks attracted stock-specific buying, although overall market breadth remained mixed.

Investors continued to focus on earnings expectations, domestic macroeconomic indicators, and developments in the global economy before taking fresh positions.

Global Cues Keep Investors Cautious

Asian markets delivered a mixed performance, while investors continued to monitor developments related to global trade, interest rate expectations, and commodity prices. These external factors kept overall sentiment subdued in domestic equities.

Market participants also remained cautious ahead of upcoming corporate earnings announcements, which are expected to provide further direction to stock-specific movements.

IPO Market Remains Active

Primary market activity continued to attract investor attention, with several public issues and SME listings generating healthy interest. Analysts believe sustained participation in IPOs reflects continued confidence among retail investors despite short-term volatility in the secondary market.

Market Outlook

According to market experts, the recent decline appears to be largely driven by profit booking after multiple sessions of gains rather than any major deterioration in market fundamentals. Investors are expected to closely watch quarterly earnings, foreign institutional investor activity, global market trends, and macroeconomic data for fresh cues.

While short-term volatility may persist, analysts believe domestic liquidity and improving corporate earnings could continue to provide support to Indian equities over the medium term.
